Kylin BJJ

The Kylin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team was established in Hong Kong during late 2006. Before this, everyone who trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Hong Kong did so under the banner of the HKBJJ association.

The realisation of our team started with a small group of dedicated students and good friends. Team Kylin was formed when a previous training venue suddenly became unavailable. Despite the option of joining other clubs, our core members still believed in overcoming our initial hardship, and continued to train BJJ together whenever temporary venues such as government sport centres became available. This continued for a while until we finally obtained our own training centre. With our first formal class on the 1st of October, 2006, Kylin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was founded.

In the hectic city that is Hong Kong, we have created a positive and friendly training atmosphere for people to come and train BJJ in order to de-stress, work out, compete and make good friends. Our doors are always open to everyone in Hong Kong and guests from overseas - all students of the Gentle Art are more than welcome to drop by and roll with us.

Team Kylin

Kylin: 麒麟 (kỳ lân)

Kylin

The Kylin is a famous mythical chimerical creature of China, and its appearance is said to mean the arrival of a sage. It is a good omen that brings rui (Chinese: 瑞; pinyin: ruì; roughly translated as "serenity" or "prosperity"). To the Chinese people, the Kylin is said to be a creature of serenity and fairness, possessing the power and ferocity to protect the weak and the pure in the face of the wicked. Often the statue of the Kylin (usually in pairs) can be found at the entrances of many buildings like houses and businesses. Kylin
Along with the Kylin are the Dragon ( 龍 ), Phoenix ( 鳳凰 ), Chinese Guardian Lion ( 獅 ), Pixiu or Pi Yao ( 貔貅 ), other Chinese mythical creatures which have their own significant meanings and representations. We have chosen the Kylin to portray our team as a reflection of our Chinese roots in Hong Kong and the free spirit, culture and innovation that is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It is our goal in Team Kylin to build a strong group of quality Martial Artists in Hong Kong through BJJ and pursue our goals as Martial Artists and Competitors of Martial Sport.

We believe in the complete Martial Artist and strongly advocate cross training amongst different disciplines to be able to understand ourselves and become knowledgeable in all ranges of fighting. Thus we learn to physically and mentally handle ourselves in any confrontational situation. Many of our members are accomplished Martial Artists in the fields of Muay Thai, Kali, Judo, Karate and Krav Maga who have chosen to study BJJ to compliment their existing knowledge.

We always remind ourselves that Jiu-Jitsu is a warrior art that enables the practitioner to effectively apply fighting skills in self defence and in defence of others. These are the ideals which were always strongly advocated by the late Grandmaster Helio Gracie.
